Another tool for worship... Happy Sunday!
"If your eye is generous, your whole being is full of light!" Jesus
If you read these Sunday posts in The Generous Eye, you already know that I consider my camera a tool for worship...my photography is all about seeing and sharing the glory of God's creation...the wonders of God's creative love. But, of course, I have to get to the places I take photos...to my church, so to speak...and around home those places are scattered in a big circle with about a 10 mile radius. I have been through a number of solutions for getting out. The car is obvious, and, now that we have a hybrid, I don't feel too bad about taking it when nothing else will serve. I have a little electric scooter which I really enjoy, but it has a range of only about 10 miles...that is 5 miles out and 5 miles back, and some of my favorite local places are beyond that range. I road a little 50cc gas scooter for two summers...while I enjoyed it, I never really came to love it. It was damaged two winters ago when the shed it was stored in collapsed under heavy snowfall and, despite my best efforts, I have not been able to get it back on the road. We are down to the one car these days, so I really needed a reliable ride...as a tool for worship.
What you see here is an electric bike...another kind of hybrid...only it is my legs that supliment the electric motor and extend its range beyond what the battery alone would do. It is relatively effortless. You just have to keep the peddles turing round and the motor does the rest. It makes the most of what my aging and slightly defective body (heart attack survivor, being treated for coronary artery disease) is still capable of. The longest ride I have taken so far is 13 miles round trip...but that puts almost all of my places of worship within reach. The camera goes in that little rack trunk, I fill the water bottle, and I am off.
And, beyond getting me to my worship places, I have rediscovered just how much like worship riding a bike can be. Some portion of our soul (and all of our spirit) pre-remembers the timeless time ahead when we will move like the wind...and riding a bicycle is a foreshadowing of that experience...or it is for me at least. And riding an electric bike is especially liberating as you feel the motor behind your heels, pushing as you push, giving you just that help you need for the steep hills and allowing you to soar over the flats. It is very like what the spirit does for us each day, with each breath, moving us as we move, enabling us to greater things than we can do on our own...giving us just that boost we need to live and love well...as long as we keep the pedals turning.
So, yes, the generous eye sees my new electric bike as a tool for worship...and a very great blessing! My you find your tools and your blessing today, and worship with all your heart. Happy Sunday!
