Caught in the flow. Happy Sunday!

“If your eye is generous, your whole being is full of light!” Jesus

I don’t know about you, but I am fascinated by flowing water. Rapids, falls, the surf along the shore, the swirl of the incoming tide, the rush as it goes out. I will bike 10 miles to get to a reliable rapid or waterfall. I photograph there, of course, but I could equally just sit and enjoy. The music of the water, the flash of light in the bubbling foam, the constantly changing shapes and forms...it all speaks to something deep in my soul. Light, of course, is one metaphor for the spirit in us and in all things...and water...living, flowing, bubbling, rushing water is the other. In a rapid or a waterfall light and water combine...as though the spirit has been made visible!

The only other place that happens as vividly is in the human face, our constantly changing expressions, especially in our eyes. It is as though we had bubbling springs of water inside that refract the light of the spirit, and keep our eyes alive. I will admit, I am not as patient of faces as I am of rapids. Faces are more real than the metaphor of rushing water, reality vs. metaphor...and being more real, much more complex. The emotions that swirl behind our eyes are often too intense for comfort...and sometimes clouded with too much self to display the full glory of the spirit within. But that spirit is always there, and can always be seen by the generous eye...the eye open to God.

May your eye be open to the spirit made flesh...and if the people around you are too complex and too intense...at least go out and find a rapid today.
