Easter Crocus. Happy Easter Sunday!
“If your eye is generous, your whole being is full of light!” Jesus
I went out this Easter Sunday Morning to see if I could dig the crocus out of the pile of snow left from plowing the winter drive, but found that there was no need. They were pushing up about six inches from the melting snow. Of course, they are often in bloom on Easter Sunday, and they have provided the image for many an Easter post. The first flower of our Maine spring, they are a fitting celebration of the rebirth of Christ, in which we all can, if we are willing and have the proverbial mustard seed of faith, have our personal rebirths.
In a way, I find it fitting that the crocus are just breaking ground today. I always think that the resurrection is more like this bursting green, and that the flower of our faith in Christ is the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, which won’t be until late May this year. The crocus will be long gone by then. of course, but as they bloom I see the promise of the unfolding of our faith in the resurrection into the flower of the indwelling spirit of Christ. And I don’t have to wait 40 days for it, for once given. it is always available to all who believe. It is the light that fills our whole being, as Jesus said...the light that goes in to, and comes out of, the generous eye. My prayer today, this Easter Sunday, is that you can celebrate the fresh green bursting life of Jesus in the resurrection, and in the power of the flower...the power of the Holy Spirit. Happy Sunday!
