Texture and Pattern. Happy Sunday!

“If your eye is generous, your whole being is full of light!” Jesus

It was the pattern and texture in the world, in the universe, that first lead me to seriously consider the possibility of God. I had come to the point where I was thinking that what makes us human is our ability to appreciate and identify meaningful patterns in the texture of the universe around us. That is the nature of human intelligence...to look for and find meaning, information, in the apparently chaotic universe. From there it was only a step to thinking that there might be a reciprocal intelligence imposing those meaningful patterns...an intelligence behind the texture of the world. And then all those Sunday School lessons bore fruit, and I began to wonder if that intelligence, making meaning in the universe, was not what my teachers had called God, Jesus, the Hold Spirit. At that point God really broke into my life and presented the choice. A universe without form or meaning, or a universe with God, intelligence, pattern, meaning. I saw that if I chose a universe with God in it, then it had one set of consequences, and if I choose a universe without God in it, then it had a different set of consequences. The question was, what was real? Which universe represents reality. Over the course of many months, God convinced me that the universe with God in it, the universe of intelligence and meaning,  is the real one...and the the universe without is a fabrication. I made my choice. I want to live in reality. It has taken a lifetime but I have come to appreciate God the Father working in love in space and time, God in human form in Jesus, renewing us as the children of God, and God overall, beyond space and time, unimaginable, in the Holy Spirit. God in the texture of the world, in the patterns...God as the meaning that gives meaning to everything. The generous eye sees the meaning, the message of God in everything. God is in the pattern of the bark on a young birch tree in early spring. God is in these words. God is in me and in you...in our ability to appreciate and celebrate the meaning in the texture of the world around us. My your generous eye be open today, and may you appreciate the meaning and the message. Happy Sunday!
